Historic Houses Foundation: Repair and Conservation

The Historic Houses Foundation offers grants of up to £250,000 for the repair and conservation of rural historic buildings and structures in England and Wales, including their gardens, grounds and outbuildings. It also funds the restoration and conservation of works of art in historic house collections open to the public. The Foundations aims to make grants for projects which either do not qualify for funding from any of the mainstream sources or have been awarded only partial funding. Listed buildings are prioritised, although exceptions may apply.

Grants range from a minimum of £1,000 to a maximum of £250,000 (in exceptional cases). Most grants awarded are below £50,000. Applicants are expected to contribute their own resources and explore other funding options.

Who Can Apply:

Eligible applicants include individuals, charities, institutions, and local authorities that legally own or are responsible for the building or artwork. Applicants typically must own the property or hold a full repairing lease with at least 20 years remaining.
