Tell us about your organisation (history, aims, vision):
Established in 2017, we are an award-winning parenting support charity that works with marginalised and disadvantaged young dads and expectant fathers (aged under 25) in the North East region of England. Our vision is for young dads to be valued and supported in their role as parents. Our mission is to enable young dads to play a safe, active and meaningful role in their children's lives, by supporting and connecting young dads and influencing wider practice.
Who do you serve? How do they access services?
North East Young Dads and Lads (NEYDL) works with young fathers under the age of 25. The young dads can refer themselves, be referred by a statutory or non-statutory organisation, or call into a Family Hub and ask a worker to refer them. They can also go on the NEYDL website and fill in a form, or give us a call.
What are your current projects or services?
At NEYDL we have a wide range of activities for young dads, including the following: parent classes; beekeeping; stay and play sessions; mountain biking; rock climbing; online gaming; Ambassa Dads; and football.
What are your three main concerns at the moment?
Our three main concerns at the moment are:
- Poor mental health amongst young dads
- Young dads from minoritised communities not accessing support
- More young dads being referred into NEYDL
