Tell us about your organisation/department/project (your aims, what you do, who you work with):

Revival is a network comprising of the recovery community, lived experience recovery organisations, drug and alcohol services and many other invested organisations and individuals that have come together to make recovery and support in Newcastle more visible and accessible. We facilitate collaboration across the board and provide opportunities for our members to learn, create and connect. We also strive to challenge stigma, provide vital awareness and be a platform that ensures voices are heard and policy is challenged and changed. There is no pressure, there is no shame, but there is opportunity.

Tell us why being a Haref Ally is important for you and your organisation

It’s vital that we recognise Newcastle’s cultural diversity and adapt our offer to ensure all have access to support that is appropriate for individuals and communities. Being a Haref Ally ensures that we are having the meaningful conversations and making the appropriate connections to make this happen. We can collaborate, integrate and expand our networks, making sure all communities are represented. Drug and alcohol issues can be prevalent in all communities and addiction doesn’t discriminate, the ongoing work and commitments of Revival and Haref will ensure our support offer doesn’t either.

Tell us about anything that you or your organisation has done to improve how you work with ethnically marginalised communities

From a drug and alcohol perspective, we have participated in honest, fruitful workshops and meetings with faith leaders and prominent community members. For what can be a challenging subject, there have been great strides made in planning for a collaborative future. We are also providing Haref’s Cultural Competency Training to our network this year and as a member of the Newcastle’s newly formed Inclusive Recovery City Council, improving connection and support to our marginalised communities is paramount.
