Tell us about your organisation/department/project (your aims, what you do, who you work with):

Flippin' Pain is an awareness campaign, working with the NHS and other local services. We share the latest science around pain with people across the UK.

We do this because how most people see pain isn't the full picture; over the past 40 years, researchers have made a lot of discoveries about pain, but very little of this information has filtered down to the average person on the street (and even to some professionals!)

It has been proven that getting to know the real science could change how you respond to pain, and even how it feels. It sounds hard to believe, but research has shown that it's true. And this could be a game-changer for anyone struggling with persistent pain.

Flippin' Pain create events and online resources for professionals and the public alike: these introduce the latest - often surprising - science of pain, but don't just share a 'one-size-fits-all' solution. We explain how everything might play a part in pain, from stress, to memory, to movement, and much more.

You can find out more on our website, watch previous webinars on YouTube, or try out our Flippin' Pain Formula: a series of podcasts, animations and worksheets that you can work through at your own pace.

Tell us why being a Haref Ally is important for you and your organisation

Pain can affect anyone and everyone: it is estimated that 30-50% of people in the UK will experienced persistent pain at some point in life. And we know that when it comes to sharing this knowledge with ethnically marginalised communities, we need to approach the subject of persistent pain with clarity and understanding.

The way we think about, talk about and treat persistent pain can vary hugely across different communities, and so being a Haref Ally has allowed us to expand our understanding, think critically about our work so far, and be part of a group who can help us do better.

Tell us about anything that you or your organisation has done to improve how you work with ethnically marginalised communities

In all honesty, we still have a way to go, which is why being part of the Haref community continues to be really valuable.

We're working on the language we use and the way we explain things, including making sure our digital platforms are easily translated. We want to engage with groups further and create resources that approach pain education in sensitive ways, for all cultures and beliefs.

We're also making sure a diverse range of voices contribute to the campaign, sharing their stories with us and giving us direction. So if you know anyone who has benefitted from pain education and would like to be part of our group, please encourage them to get in touch!
