The church of the Holy Nativity, Chapel House

Holy Nativity Chapel House

Tell us about your organisation/department/project (your aims, what you do, who you work with):

Holy Nativity is an inclusive church and a charity. Our purpose is to serve the local community regardless of people’s faith, creed, gender, background etc. Service is not something done to the community but by listening and working with individuals and organisations who are passionate about supporting one another. Beyond the worship offered here, we host a number initiatives ran by partner organisations or church volunteers. In addition to regular drop-ins (warm spaces) open to everyone three days a week, the Memory Teas (ran by Search), the Men’s Group (ran by Chain Reaction), a bi-monthly PROPS meeting, a Baby and Toddler Group, we also hosts a few private groups of friends who meet to support each other and enjoy each other’s company. We have also hosted a number of initiatives ran by the Council such as free IT classes and so on. In sum, we do our best to support any initiative that can support or enrich people’s lives in the West Outer West of Newcastle.

Tell us why being a Haref Ally is important for you and your organisation

The story of Holy Nativity has been shaped by people from the local community of different faiths and various cultural and social background. Being a Haref Ally is for Holy Nativity a way to honour this history and ensure that the church serves everyone and promote unity and wellbeing for all.

Tell us about anything that you or your organisation has done to improve how you work with ethnically marginalised communities

Signing up to Haref is a first step towards this goal. Through this partnership, I hope to deepen my understanding of ethnically marginalised communities – riches and challenges – so as to better promote unity in the local community and respond to real needs. Volunteers and I are currently looking to host a big community lunch some time in 2026, intentionally inviting people from ethnically marginalized communities through our groups and partners. The hope is to provide an occasion to bring together all the communities that form the local community, marginalised and non-marginalised, to promote fellowship and unity.
