Tell us about your organisation:

St Oswald's Hospice is a charitable hospice serving the North East of England, providing specialist palliative and end of life care for adults, babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions. The hospice supports not only patients but also their families and carers through clinical care, emotional, social and spiritual support, bereavement services, education, and community outreach. Its mission is to help people make the most of their time and improve quality of life, delivering expert, dignified and compassionate care wherever and whenever it is needed. .

Tell us why being a Haref Ally is important for you and your organisation:

Being a Haref Ally helps us understand the lived experience of marginalised communities who face healthcare inequality. Their training informs both our ethos and the way we deliver care. They share practical ways to become a more inclusive organisation in line with our Hospice Strategy. Being an ally makes it easier to connect with other charities, community groups and healthcare providers to avoid us all working in isolation.

Tell us about anything that you or your organisation has done to improve how you work with ethnically marginalised communities:

Establishing “Community Connectors”. Community groups and individuals who can help us bust some of the myths surrounding Hospice Care and help us better understand the needs of under-served communities and the barriers they face to accessing palliative care.

Several visits to community groups and hosting Hospice visits to built mutual trust and understanding. We have an event at the end of June with Acane, where we will share food, music and stories.
