West Road Medical Centre
Tell us about your organisation/department/project (your aims, what you do, who you work with):
We are a GP practice based on Newcastle's West Road. We have 12,103 patients registered with us. We are an NHS service whose aim is to provide primary medical care to our registered patients. We are deeply rooted into the vibrant community of the West End, which has a mix of languages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and cultures. We try, where we can, to advocate for our patients in the wider health system to promote fair care for all.
Tell us why being a Haref Ally is important for you and your organisation
We are very honoured to be a Haref Ally. Working closely with the VCSE sector is part of our day-to-day service to patients, and we feel very lucky to have such fantastic services local to us. Haref have always been very supportive of our work and to our patients, and we've seen the benefits of sector intelligence, training and links. In a system that can treat minorities as an afterthought it is vital that organisations such as Haref communicate with and advocate for all parts of our community.
Tell us about anything that you or your organisation has done to improve how you work with ethnically marginalised communities
We have worked hard to produce health information in other languages and we are proud of our outreach work to promote cervical screening uptake and childhood immunisations. Our work in the local foodbank has also been nominated for two national awards just this week, and we are very proud!
We also worked with Haref and other local community groups to rewrite our results letters for patients who have long-term medical conditions. The aim was to make these letters more effective in health improvement. If you would like to find out more about 'a day in the life' of one of our practice nurses, please watch this short video.
