Ramadan Calendars 2023

Ramadan is one of the holiest months of the Islamic calendar so it is important for all our Muslim communities. This year, Ramadan falls between 22 March to 21 April. During Ramadan, Muslims fast during the daylight hours. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and Muslims fast to increase taqwa (closeness to God). Ramadan is also a time for families and communities to come together, strengthen connections and donate to charity. Learn more from the Muslim Council of Britain.
Fasting cleanses us both spiritually and physically. This calendar serves as a reminder for our prayers and our physical wellbeing during this holy month’
Imam Ali Asad, Madina Masjid.
Muslims who observe the month-long fast will not eat food, drink liquids or smoke from dawn to sunset. Anyone with serious health issues, frail, pregnant or on daily medication/ medical treatment is not expected to fast.
The idea for the prayer calendars came from our local Imams over 15 years ago and each year we work with them to develop and distribute the calendars to our local Muslim communities. Alongside the prayer times, the calendars contain safe fasting information, tips on managing diabetes, and managing your glaucoma. This important health advice is created in partnership with NHS Diabetes Centre, Glaucoma UK and Diabetes UK.
This year, Haref has worked with 11 mosques across North Tyneside, Gateshead and Newcastle upon Tyne to create unique calendars for each mosque. Prayer times are calculated using complex mathematics around the position of the sun, local time, longitude and latitude. For this reason, the prayer times vary between mosques so they all need a specific calendar.
Our 2023 Ramadan prayer calendars are available online and in print format. We are delivering the printed calendars to the mosques and we will be sending them out to community-faced buildings.
We appreciate your support in helping to share this information with our communities.
