Local organisations step-up to provide free school meals during October half-term holiday

Following the parliamentary vote not to extend the Free School Meals over the October half term we’ve been humbled to see so many local organisations and businesses unite to ensure local children don’t go hungry over the school holidays.

Newcastle City Council

Newcastle City Council has implemented a backstop for parents to register and receive a packed lunch for their children if they can’t make use of other offers of support.

Families with children eligible for Free School Meals can register through Citylife Line to receive lunches for their children at various locations throughout the city during half-term.

If your child/children are eligible for free school meals you may be able to access a packed lunch over the half term holiday (Monday 26th October to Friday 30th October 2020).

This can be done by visiting www.newcastle.gov.uk/welfare and completing the short online form or by calling 0800 170 7001.

Gateshead Council

Community hubs, which have brought together key partners within local communities to provide crucial support to residents who have needed help throughout the pandemic, will now ensure that children are able to get a school meal during half-term. Any family, who receives free school meals, can request a food pack with ingredients to make lunches throughout half-term. Support can be requested online here or ring 0191 433 7112. For more information visit the Gateshead Council website: Free School Meals

Gateshead FC and Gateshead Foundation have offered their support to the local authority in being able to provide a meal or packed lunch for any child that needs one. They have capabilities of putting up packed lunch packs whether it be a one-off or more and can drop to any organisation or school that needs them. Contact: info@gfc-foundation.org.uk or call: 07584 674905.

They are also raising funds to support others who are able to do similar with all donations going towards helping families in need in Gateshead: Just Giving Gateshead FC Holiday Hunger appeal.
