Advocacy Centre North, part of Newcastle CVS, has just been awarded an exciting contract to deliver statutory advocacy services across the Borough Council of Gateshead to vulnerable residents.

Jacqui Jobson, Director at Advocacy Centre North said:

“I am delighted to extend our services across Gateshead. We look forward to working with our partners in Gateshead Council, to deliver essential advocacy support to people under the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and the Care Act. Giving vulnerable people a voice is at the heart of our service, and this contract will help us to increase our reach in the region. This contract adds to our existing portfolio of services in Gateshead, where we already provide a voice, access to services and uphold the rights of people with neurological conditions, those with complex needs, those leading chaotic lives and those struggling to navigate within the welfare system. The contract is initially for two years with a further two year extension and we intend to start networking across Gateshead from April 2017 to raise our profile.”

Advocacy Centre North have launched a Crowdfunding campaign inspired by the film I, Daniel Blake. We need your help to raise funds to provide a new Welfare Advocate to support people like I, Daniel Blake.

The I, Daniel Blake team and Ken Loach (I, Daniel Blake Director) have been supporting us by tweeting and publicising our campaign. They have also backed us up by providing us promotional materials and merchandise that we are able to give as a reward to those £100 pledgers!

Advocacy Centre North are very excited about this new adventure and hope you will support them through donations and by sharing far and wide through your networks, mailings, social media and beyond.

What’s on in Newcastle and Gateshead

For the last few years Newcastle CVS has published a newsletter on what was happening in Newcastle to celebrate International Women’s Day. This year we have extended it to include Gateshead activities. We put out a call three times for information and we would like to say thank you to those individuals, groups and organisations that have organised events and activities. Please circulate this around your networks and if you are not doing something this year, you might want to consider organising something for IWD 2018!

Newcastle CVS has made a response to Improving Lives: The Work, Health and Disability Green Paper.

It is a stark statistic that only 8% of employers report they have recruited a person with a disability or long term health condition over a year; we ask should there be more focus on the role of employers and of access to employment tribunals? Should there be more use of the Equality Act as only 48% of people with a disability are employed, compared to 80% non-disabled people. Whilst the Green Paper makes the case to employers, legislative change has always been required to tackle discrimination.
