  • About our trustees

    Connected Voice is governed by a trustee board that oversees the financial and legal security of the organisation as well as leading on governance. The board meets bi-monthly throughout the year and extra meetings are arranged when necessary. All our trustees are elected by Connected Voice members at our annual general meeting. A staff council of four board members and four staff members meet quarterly to discuss issues relating to staff wellbeing. Our current trustees are:

  • Chair – Simon Elliott

    Simon has been Chair of Newcastle CVS since 2015 and is also the Chair of Northern Stage.  He has previously served as Chair of North Tyneside Regeneration Partnership and of Tyneside Cinema.  In his professional life, Simon was HR leader of Procter & Gamble Innovation Centres, retiring in 2018 after more than 30 years.    Simon has lived in the North East since 1981, is married to Julie and they have two grown up children.  He is passionate about the impact the arts can make in transforming lives and the responsibility everyone has to make society better, particularly for those in most need.

  • Treasurer - Martin Horrocks

    Martin Horrocks has more than 30 years practical senior management experience, working largely in the field of finance, but with significant roles in the fields of HR and organisational management. The first half of his career was mostly in the commercial manufacturing world :-very large marine engines, cables and carpets. He cheerfully admits to running away to join a travelling ice skating show, and is still slightly embarrassed about the brief spell in recruitment consultancy. Having seen sense, he embraced the charitable sector, working in the fields of  infrastructure, culture and education.

    The organisations he’s worked for have varied in size from £500k to £30m turnover, employing between 8 and 600 people. He’s currently enjoying being Finance Manager at Durham Students’ Union.


  • Steve Nash

    Steve is Chairperson and Coordinator of VOLSAG, the mental health voluntary sector network for Newcastle and Gateshead, and represents the sector at the CCG led Mental Health Advisory Group and other strategic fora. He is a qualified occupational therapist and dramatherapist with over thirty years experience in health and social care and other parts of the public sector, especially mental health services. Since 1998  he has led a variety of service development projects across a range of different organisational settings, and between 2006 and 2016 he did this as an independent consultant.  In addition to being a Trustee at Newcastle CVS He is a Director of Blue Stone Consortium, and Co Chair of ReCoCo, the Recovery College Collective. He is also a musician, and works internationally as a Playback Theatre practitioner, offering creative, drama based ways of working with communities, groups and teams.

  • Kate Israel

    Kate Israel is currently chair of Healthwatch Newcastle.  She is also a trustee of Tell Us North. She has worked for many years in Local Government and have many years experience in Community Development work. Her most recent experience before leaving Local Government included; developing and supporting partnerships such as Community safety and Health and Social Care Partnerships, Community Resilience and Emergency Planning, Adult Safeguarding and Domestic Violence services and Commissioning Adult Social Care services.

  • Nitin Shukla

    Nitin is Policy, Performance and Scrutiny Officer at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria. He has worked in the public sector for over 30 years and has experience of equality and diversity. Nitin is Chair of Haven Tyneside which provides supported accommodation for vulnerable people; Vice Chair of Governors at Bridgewater Primary School; Development Board Member of Marie Curie Hospice and member of the ITV Tyne Tees Diversity Panel. Nitin is also a member of Newcastle University Court and Secretary of the North East Gujarati Association. He is a passionate Rotarian, Past President of Newcastle West Rotary Club.
